We strive to prevent disease through "natural" goat care. We'd rather spend our resources on prevention than on "cures".
We believe that like humans animals are what they eat and drink. We also believe that like humans they are affected by their environment either positively or negatively.
We feed alfalfa hay free choice. And we keep baking soda and sea salt out for them. We also post around a few high copper content mineral blocks with no sweetener in them. And of course plenty of fresh clean non-chlorinated well water.
We feed alfalfa chaffhaye as much as they will eat.
In addition we add a mix of rolled oats, black oil sunflower seeds, between 12 and 20 different dried herbs (depending on the season) and extra virgin olive oil.
Bucks and pregnant does get 1/2 lb. of this mixture once a day.
Does in milk get up to 4 lbs. depending on their weight and overall condition and milk production.
Our goats have access to about 3 acres of wooded browse and are protected by a pair of the finest LGD's to ever walk the earth, in our opinion of course :-)
We have found that the blend of herbs along with the natural probiotics from the chaffhaye go a long way to keeping their immune systems strong and healthy. We rarely have to use chemical wormers. When we do use them it's on goats who were born on farms that regularly use them. We switch these goats over to a natural lifestyle slowly so as not to shock their systems too much. We've noticed that they do respond and can be completely converted from chemicals when we take our time with them and keep them under strict observation.
All that said we will do whatever it takes to assure and maintain the health and safety of our animals. So if a chemical or a shot is what is called for in a given moment... we'll do it.
